Caramel Apple Crisp Recipe

A dish of caramel apple crisp made with J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works caramel sauce

When the leaves begin to turn, the mornings get a little cooler, and the first cozy sweaters come out of the closet, there’s one thing we start craving: a warm dessert straight from the oven.

Fall has a way of making simple ingredients feel special. Apples, cinnamon, butter, brown sugar — familiar flavors that somehow taste even better when they’re baked together and shared around the table.

And if there’s one way to make a classic apple crisp even more special, it’s with a little help from J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works.

This warm apple crisp is everything we love about fall: tender baked apples, a buttery oat topping, warm cinnamon, and just the right amount of sweetness. The finishing touch? A generous drizzle of J.Q. Dickinson caramel.

With four flavors of the J.Q. Dickinson caramel sauces to choose from — Burnt, Dark Chocolate, Bourbon, and Spicy Dark Chocolate — there’s a caramel for every kind of fall craving.

A Classic Fall Dessert with a Caramel Twist

Apple crisp has always been one of those desserts that feels right at home in the fall.

Unlike a more elaborate pie, a crisp doesn’t need to be perfect. There’s no crust to roll out or lattice to fuss over. You simply slice your apples, toss them with a few warm spices, cover them with a buttery oat topping, and let the oven do the work.

The result is a dessert that’s rustic, comforting, and meant to be enjoyed warm.

But what makes this version extra special is what happens when the crisp comes out of the oven.

While the apples are still bubbling and the topping is golden and crisp, spoon some warm J.Q. Dickinson caramel over the top. The caramel melts into the warm apples and crisp topping, creating a rich finishing layer in every bite.

Choosing the Right Caramel

One of the best parts about this dessert is that you can choose the caramel flavor that fits your mood.

Burnt Caramel brings a deeper, more robust caramel flavor that pairs beautifully with the sweetness and acidity of baked apples.

Dark Chocolate Caramel is perfect when you’re craving something richer, adding a chocolatey element to the warm fruit and buttery topping.

For something with a little more character, Bourbon Caramel brings warm, complex notes that feel right at home alongside cinnamon, brown sugar, and baked apples.

And if you like a little heat with your sweet, Spicy Dark Chocolate Caramel adds another layer of flavor to this cozy fall dessert.

Whichever one you choose, the idea is simple: warm apple crisp + your favorite J.Q. Dickinson caramel = a fall dessert worth making again.

Choosing the Apples

For an apple crisp, you want apples that hold their shape while baking but become tender enough to cut with a spoon.

A mixture of apples can also be a great way to build flavor. Some apples bring more sweetness, while others add a little tartness. That contrast works especially well with the rich caramel topping.

Fall is the perfect time to take advantage of the apples available at local markets and farms.

Once your apples are sliced, toss them with cinnamon, a little sugar, and the other ingredients in the recipe. Then pile them into your baking dish and get ready for the best part.

The Crisp Topping

The topping is what gives an apple crisp its name — and its irresistible texture.

A combination of oats, flour, brown sugar, butter, and a pinch of salt creates a golden, crumbly topping that bakes over the apples.

As it cooks, the butter melts into the oats and flour while the brown sugar caramelizes around the edges. The apples soften underneath, creating a contrast between the tender fruit and crisp, buttery topping.

And when you add a warm drizzle of J.Q. Dickinson caramel on top?

That’s when things get really good.

Warm Apple Crisp with J.Q. Dickinson Caramel

For the Apple Filling

  • 6–7 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon J.Q. Dickinson Heirloom Salt
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

For the Crisp Topping

  • ¾ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon J.Q. Dickinson salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

For Serving

  • J.Q. Dickinson Burnt, Dark Chocolate, Bourbon, or Spicy Dark Chocolate Caramel

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F.

In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, J.Q. Dickinson salt, and lemon juice. Transfer the mixture to a lightly buttered baking dish and spread it into an even layer.

For the topping, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the mixture until coarse crumbs form.

Scatter the topping evenly over the apples.

Bake for approximately 40–50 minutes, or until the apples are bubbling around the edges and the topping is golden brown.

When the crisp comes out of the oven, let it rest for a few minutes — if you can wait that long.

Then spoon generous portions into bowls and drizzle with your choice of warm J.Q. Dickinson caramel.

For an extra cozy dessert, serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and another drizzle of caramel.

A Dessert Made for Sharing

There’s something special about a dessert that doesn’t need to be fancy to feel memorable.

Maybe it’s because apple crisp reminds us of the changing seasons. Maybe it’s the smell of cinnamon filling the kitchen. Or maybe it’s the simple pleasure of sitting around a table with people you love, passing around a warm dish and deciding who gets the last spoonful.

At J.Q. Dickinson, food has always been connected to family, farming, and place. As seventh-generation salt-makers, Nancy Bruns and Lewis Payne returned to their family’s land in Malden, West Virginia, to revive the family’s salt-making tradition.

This apple crisp fits right into that spirit.

It’s uncomplicated. It’s seasonal. It’s made for sharing.

And it’s a reminder that sometimes the best recipes are the ones that give familiar ingredients a little something extra.

So as fall settles into West Virginia, grab a few good apples, warm up the oven, and make a crisp worth gathering around.

And don’t forget the caramel.

Whether you reach for Burnt, Dark Chocolate, Bourbon, or Spicy Dark Chocolate, there’s a J.Q. Dickinson caramel ready to make this fall classic a little more special.
